Workmen building a new petrol station in Highbridge were this week surprised when they began uncovering local history from the earth.
Hundreds of perfectly preserved glass bottles have been found in the clay under the site of the new Asda petrol station.
They range from beer and cider bottles from local breweries to miniature ink and perfume bottles, plus complete clay pots, as pictured here.
Site manager Ian Woodgate told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We’ve been surprised at the large number of bottles found in the clay – we think it used to be an old landfill site, as many of the bottles are in a super condition.”
“We’re giving them away to local people and have already had a local history group visit us to take away the best preserved local brewery bottles.”
“Many more are probably still to be found in coming days as we remove earth from the excavations for the new petrol tanks.”
Asda is on track to open the new petrol station outside its Caxton Road store by the end of the year.
