Burnham-On-Sea army cadets win award for best platoon in Somerset

-

A group of army cadets from Burnham-On-Sea is this week celebrating after their most successful annual summer camp in the platoon’s history.

The 24 cadets were awarded the Lucas Tooth Trophy for the best detachment in Somerset.

The trophy has never been held by the Burnham platoon in its history and is awarded for the highest combined efforts of the cadets in a range of subjects including shooting, sports, first aid and Duke of Edinburgh Award passes and it signifies the highest honour a detachment can achieve each year.

Outgoing platoon commander Captain Kat Dee said: “The detachment has gone from strength to strength in the past two years and the Lucas Tooth award has been a goal we have all been striving towards.”

“This recognition shows the cadets that they can achieve great things together and I hope they use it as a continued inspiration to push forward. I cannot be prouder of the cadets from Burnham.”

The cadets also took part in a busy programme of activities which included field craft, shooting, paintball, archery, climbing and kayaking as well as training towards their Army Proficiency Certificate passes.

Two senior cadets completed their senior cadet instructors’ course with serving members of the armed forces and achieved exceptionally high grades. Both were rewarded with promotions to the rank of Colour Sergeant.

The detachment currently has a small number of vacancies for new cadets. Those interested in joining should visit the unit on a parade night – Monday or Wednesday evenings from 7pm – from 1st September. Cadets can be male or female and should be in school year 8 or older.
