Businesses in Burnham-On-Sea have shown their support for the armed forces by signing up for a new discount scheme that has just been launched this week.
Cafes, pubs and takeaways in the town have been asked to display a poster in their windows offering discounts for soldiers, sailors, airmen and their families.
The scheme has been launched by local former soldier James Heappey who served in Northern Ireland, Iraq and Afghanistan during his 10 years in the Army.
“The response to the scheme from businesses in Burnham has been brilliant and I hope that many more will be inspired to sign up over the coming weeks,” James told Burnham-On-Sea.com.
He is pictured with Ryan Bird, manager of the FoneHouse on the High Street, who was delighted to join the scheme and has offered a 25% discount on mobile phone accessories in his store.
He said: “It’s great to be doing our bit – I hope plenty of soldiers are able to take advantage.”
Other Burnham and Highbridge businesses to have signed up include MI Games, Bessie’s Sweet Shoppe, BOS Cafe, Hair of the Dog and Emanuel’s Jewellery.
“This is a simple, but effective way for businesses to show that they support our armed forces and, as a former soldier, I know that it is this sort of scheme that really makes troops feel special when they are out in a town,” added James.
“You might not be in the market for a haircut, a new computer game or a quick cup of coffee, but just seeing the posters in the windows tells you that the people of Burnham-onSea are right behind you and all you do for our country,” added James, who was selected as the Conservatives’ prospective parliamentary candidate for the Wells constituency earlier this year, as reported here.
