The unusual sight of a flock of more than 30 Arctic Terns have been spotted in Highbridge this weekend.
Local bird watcher James Packer, who shot these photos of the birds at Apex Park, said to see so many is unusual.
“Some pass through Somerset each year, but at the moment there’s quite a few all along the Severn Estuary, with a group of about 30-40 at the Apex and Holiday Village lakes,” he told Burnham-On-Sea.com.
“They are on passage to the north, so they won’t be here for long. They are not rare, but it unusual to see so many here and to be able to watch them at such close range.”
He added that Arctic Terns are probably the longest-travelling migrant bird. They winter off South Africa and Antarctica and breed in the Arctic. For more details, see www.somersetbirder.co.uk.
