Young Burnham-On-Sea archery enthusiast wins top regional title

-

A young Burnham-On-Sea archery enthusiast is celebrating success after winning a top regional title.

Burnham Company of Archers, based at the town’s BASC ground, were represented by three junior archers – Molly Joyce, Darragh Joyce and Martin Masterman – at the Somerset Junior Indoor Archery Championships at Priory School in Weston.

The competition sees the archers having to shoot 60 arrows at a 60cm-wide target, 20 yards away.

Molly, shooting a traditional English longbow, not only won the U12 category but also came away with the overall girls longbow title, having beaten the U18 archer in second place by five points.

During the indoor season which runs from October to March, Molly has won the south west regional title, county title and also placed second in the junior nationals.

At the county championships, Darragh placed 1st in the U14 boys recurve category, narrowly missing out on the overall title to someone in the U18 category.

Martin was placed third in the U16 boys recurve category in what was his first tournament at county level.

Molly attends Brent Knoll Primary School, and Darragh and Martin attend King Alfred School in Highbridge.

To support the development of junior archers within the area, Burnham Company of archers is currently seeking planning permission for an indoor range to be placed within the BASC site, as Burnham-On-Sea.com first reported here, so that the club can offer improved facilities for training and practice.

If you would like to find out more about archery or even organise a have-a-go, please feel free to contact the club via their website www.burnhamcompanyofarchers.co.uk
