Burnham-On-Sea firm supports unique new apprenticeship scheme

-

A unique new apprenticeship and traineeship scheme is to be launched next month with the help of a Burnham-On-Sea firm.

Aimed at aspiring young people in the Burnham area who wish to work in the construction industry, Bridgwater College is starting the new Interior Systems Apprenticeship and Traineeship initiative with the backing of Burnham Plastering and Drylining.

The apprenticeship comes at a time when demand for new plasterers and dry liners is rising. By the year 2018, the demand is forecast to stand at 4,000 in the South West due to thousands of new homes and industrial developments starting to be built.

The training modules will include a number of key subjects including general workplace safety, installing dry lining joints, encasements and partition systems.

Steve Battersby, Head of Construction, said: “We have moved quickly to develop this fantastic opportunity for some new traineeships and apprenticeships in this non-traditional trade area.”

“It is clear that interior systems and dry lining is the latest way that homes are cladded internally and that with all the new developments in Sedgemoor there is a shortfall of skill craft operatives in this field. Alongside the Apprenticeship we will be starting a full-time option from September 2014, and with so many job opportunities readily available, I am sure it will be well received.”

Those interested in applying for the new traineeships are invited to attend an information evening on Tuesday 4th February from 6pm at the college. To book a place at the event call 01278 655111 or email business@bridgwater.ac.uk.
