A young apprentice from King Alfred School in Highbridge has completed a four week placement at Homes in Sedgemoor over the summer.
The Young Apprentice Programme was a collaborative project between Homes in Sedgemoor and the school that aimed to prepare young people for the world of work, giving them the opportunity to learn new skills, increase their confidence and help them understand the realities of getting a job.
Liam Durkin was one of nine young people who took part in the programme, working within a group of Year 12 students to complete three interactive sessions around communication, interview skills, presentation skills and employability.
Following presentations and a formal interview process, Liam was offered a work placement at Homes in Sedgemoor during August and spent time with various teams, including Community Engagement, Customer Services and IT.
Liam’s part in the young apprentice programme has really helped to increase his confidence. Liam didn’t have any work experience before taking part, but he has now gained new skills and knowledge which he can apply to a real work environment in the future.
On completion of his four week work placement Liam received £100. Liam said: “I would like to thank Homes in Sedgemoor for giving me this opportunity because it has been absolutely amazing.”
Dawn Lang, Chief Executive of Homes in Sedgemoor said: “We would like to thank Liam for his hard work at Homes in Sedgemoor over the summer and wish him all the best for his future.”
