Dozens of fruit trees have been planted at Highbridge’s Apex Park this week as part of a project to create a new orchard.
Sedgemoor District Council is working with the Friends of Apex Park to introduce scores of apple trees besides the lakeside footpaths.
It comes after the council was awarded £1,000 from the Big Tree Plant funding scheme, run by the Forestry Commission.
Sedgemoor Ecologist Pete Grainger, pictured above, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We’ve been planting a new linear orchard besides the main footpath at the park and further planting work will be continuing in coming weeks.”
“The blossom will look superb in the summer, the trees will also help to promote wildlife in the park and provide shelter to walkers.”
“The new trees will provide apple of many different local varieties, including culinary and desert types.”
“I hope we’ll be able to hold a community apple pressing event in the future to create a local apple juice and other products that the community can get involved in.”
