Two quick-thinking residents rescued an injured swan at Highbridge’s Apex Park on Monday (January 3rd) after spotting that it had got tangled up in fishing tackle.
With the help of passers-by, Joy Russell and Graham Hall coaxed the bird to the shore from the main lake at Apex Park, then rushed it to Secret World Wildlife Centre at East Huntspill for a check-over.
“The young swan was spotted by eagle-eyed passers-by with fishing line, hooks and tackle wrapped around its neck.”
“They managed to coax the bird closer to shore with bread and my friend Graham managed to get hold of the swan and have a go at untangling the bird,” Joy told Burnham-On-Sea.com.
“Unsure whether all the line was freed, we wrapped him in a towel and drove him to Secret World for expert advice.”
She added: “The bird was amazingly relaxed and didn’t struggle at all, probably because the birds on the Apex are quite tame and used to humans. The lady at Secret World gave the bird a good check over. Luckily, there was no damage done and we were able to return the bird safely back to the ponds.”
“If it had been ignored, I’m afraid there could have been a sadder end.”
