Over 1,000 children and their families from across Somerset flocked to Apex Park on Wednesday (August 1st) for a special day of holiday activities.
Called ‘Sedgemoor Playday’, the event included more than 20 workshops and activities including African drumming, climbing, high wire balancing, arts and crafts making, circus skills, model boating from Burnham Model Boat Club and tennis from Burnham’s Lawn Tennis Club.
The successful event was boosted by long-overdue hot summer weather and was run by the County Council, Sedgemoor District Council, the Friends of Apex Park and Somerset Early Years Play and Childcare Service.
It was part of a nationwide scheme to encourage thousands of children and young people to get out and play at locally organised events.
All ages of children came along and they were encouaged to have a go at various activities, from well-known school sports events such as rounders and egg and spoon races to more modern bouncy slides and hula-hooping!
Visitors were also able to meet the crew of Burnham’s rescue hovercraft and learn about how to play safely on Somerset’s beaches. They were also able to clamber onboard the Light Of Elizabeth hovercraft.
Burnham police were also in attendance to give tips on how to security mark childrens’ bicycles and other play equipment.
According to research carried out by Playdays, an increase in traffic, crime and an intolerance towards young people has left parents not wanting to allow their children to play outside their homes.
Rosie Pike from Somerset Early Years Play and Childcare Service said: “We have recieved a lot of positive feedback from parents throughout the day. Apex proved to be an ideal location for the event and we had more visitors than expected.”
“People came from all over Somerset to join in the day and some families even travelled from Devon. It is the biggest event that we have organised and we are grateful for the support from all those who helped us to put it on.”
