Highbridge’s Apex Leisure and Wildlife Park has been awarded a sought-after Green Flag Award for the first time.
The winners of this year’s awards were announced on Wednesday (July 18th) by Parks Minister Baroness Andrews – and it was good news for our area.
Delighted staff from Sedgemoor District Council, which owns Apex, will be collecting their award at a ceremony in Leeds next Thursday, July 26th.
And an official Green Flag raising ceremony at the 42-acre park will then be held later in August.
Now nearly 11 years old, the Government’s Green Flag Award scheme recognises parks that achieve certain standards in the same way that the Blue Flag scheme recognises clean beaches.
“Gaining a coveted Green Flag Award brings parks and councils a range of benefits, from setting local indicators, to highlighting the importance of green space development for community regeneration,” district council spokeswoman Claire Faun told Burnham-On-Sea.com.
“The scheme also encourages parks to recognise the role of community engagement in reducing crime, improving educational opportunities and engendering civic pride.”
“Several departments at Sedgemoor District Council, as well as community groups have been involved in gaining this coveted award. They include the Parks Development Team in preparing a management plan and development projects within the park, Clean Surroundings who work in partnership with the Park Development Team to maintain it, The Friends of Apex Park, plus our Facilities Management team who oversaw the refurbishment of the toilet block and Park Information Point,” she added.
