The mud-soaked play area at Highbridge’s Apex Park has been temporarily closed this week by Sedgemoor District Council after problems worsened.
Burnham-On-Sea.com was first to report last month how parents are furious that children’s equipment at the new £140,000 play park, which only opened in December, has been surrounded by thick mud.
On Thursday, Sedgemoor District Council spokesman Claire Faun told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Due to continuing poor weather, we have had to temporarily close the fenced toddler play area of the new Playscape area due to the worn condition of the grass areas and muddy conditions under foot.”
“Sedgemoor District Council apologies to the many children and parents who are already keen users of the play area.”
She added: “Ground conditions need to improve before the playground contractor can return to the site to undertake the necessary remedial works and/or modifications to the council’s satisfaction.”
The district council hopes the works will be carried soon and hopefully in time for the Easter holidays, but it cautioned that this “is entirely weather dependent.”
It is expected that a new tiger mulch surfacing will be laid underneath the bird nest swings so the existing grass erosion matting can be reused and that two wear pads or tarmac can be created just inside each entrance gate.
In the meantime, Sedgemoor District Council will be supplying and spreading bark in the junior area where muddy conditions prevail to allow the children to continue to use this part of the park.
