A wildlife park in Burnham-On-Sea has this week been named as one of the top ten green spaces in the South West.
Apex Park has been awarded a ‘Planting Places’ award by Sustainability South West, which shines the spotlight on the best examples of public, sustainable green areas across the region.
Apex Park, which is the only location in Somerset to win an award, attracts thousands of visitors each year, catering for activities including model boating, dog walking and angling.
Sedgemoor District Council’s Open Spaces Project Officer Marina Turner told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “I was informed that the standard of entries from across the South West was extremely high and that the judges had a very hard time choosing the winners.”
“This is fantastic news for Apex Park, the Friends of its Improvements Group and for Sedgemoor District Council. I really hope it helps us to score more points with our Green Flag entry this year!”
“I believe that grant assistance from the Somerset Community Foundation to provide more events, the recent installation of a new play area, and Natural England’s recent recommendation to declare the park a Local Nature Reserve have been a huge contribution towards our winning entry.”
The other winners were Pentylands Country Park, Highworth and Oakfrith Wood near Devizes, both in Wiltshire, along with Kemble Community Gardens in Cirencester, Gloucestershire; The Chiswell Earthworks in Portland, Dorset and Young’s Park Conservation Area in Paignton, Devon. Cornwall took the most accolades with four winners: Hayle Library Community and Wildlife Garden in Hayle; Morrab Garden in Penzance; St Guron’s Way in Bodmin and Steeple Woodland in St Ives.
All the winners will be invited to an awards ceremony later in the spring.
