Highbridge’s Apex Park is to receive a £140,000 windfall that will see its play area modernised.
The project, which is being partly funded by National Lottery cash, aims to deliver a ‘natural play space’ which will use existing grassy areas and make use of natural materials such as sand, bark mulch and timber, in addition to new, modern play equipment.
“The area identified for the playscape will see the replacement and enlargement of the existing play area and should create a flagship site that will become a visitor attraction for the entire district,” district council spokeswoman Claire Faun told Burnham-On-Sea.com on Wednesday (January 22nd).
The project has already begun, with Sedgemoor District Council appointing landscape architects Swan Paul Partnership to design a larger play space for the park.
Consultation will take place with children and young people, parents and local councillors in the coming weeks and work is scheduled to begin in June and be completed for the school summer holidays in July 2009.
The total cost of the project is £140,000, with £60,000 coming from the Big Lottery, £73,462 from RLT2 (Recreation, Leisure and Tourism funding) and £6,538 from Sedgemoor District Council. The district council says it has also written to Burnham and Highbridge Town Council, inviting it to make a financial contribution.
