Environment Agency bosses are investigating a possible outbreak of toxic blue-green algae at Burnham-On-Sea’s Apex Wildlife Park.
Fishing was banned at the lakes last summer and dog owners were also asked to keep pets away from the water after a confirmed outbreak of the algae.
On Monday (July 31st), both the Environment Agency and Sedgemooor District Council ‘s Clean Surroundings Department told Burnham-On-Sea.com that they were investigating.
Recent high temperatures and low amounts of rain have given the lakes a vivid green appearance in recent days, as pictured, prompting the concerns.
An Environment Agency spokesman added: “We have recorded algae here in the past, so there’s no reason for it not to re-appear when suitable conditions occur, usually during hot weather with little or no rain. Under certain circumstances this algae can produce toxins harmful to animals, such as dogs.”
The park was closed three years ago for several weeks during a heavy outbreak of the algae.
