Two robbers who burst into a Burnham-On-Sea antiques shop on Thursday afternoon (March 1st) threatened the owner with a knife and fled with valuables worth up to £10,000.
Police said the huge haul came during a terrifying robbery at Castle Antiques in Victoria Street, which started at 3pm.
The person inside, who has requested not to be named, told Burnham-On-Sea.com how the incident unfolded.
He said: “Two chaps came into the shop as I was serving a lady. I had half finished with her, so asked if I could help them.”
“They asked to see a gold chain in the shop window, which I duly took out for them. Once the lady customer had left, they made a snatch for the item.”
“I was determined not to let go, and was thrown to the floor in the scuffle. One of the men then threatened me with a knife.”
“Eventually, he managed to wrench the chain off me and took jewellery and other items which I reckon were worth around £10,000.”
“The whole thing has came as a complete shock – I was kicked in the kidneys, which is still badly aching today, and also had a patch of skin taken off my arm in the scuffle. Other than that, I am otherwise unharmed.”
“We are still trying to calculate was taken and how much it’s all worth.”
Police officers were at the scene late into Thursday evening gathering evidence and spokeswoman Elaine Parr confirmed that a full investigation is underway.
She told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “I can confirm that two white males, aged between 30 and 40, went into the shop and assaulted the elderly owner inside and also took a quantity of items.”
She also added: “We will be releasing more information on Monday.”
