The discovery of this rusty anchor on Berrow beach is attracting the interest of local historians amid talk that it could be from the Berrow wreck.
The metallic object was recovered from the mudflats and an investigation is underway to discover whether it could be from the stricken SS Nornen, which ran aground at Berrow in March 1897.
Beach warden Dave Furber told Burnham-On-Sea.com this week: “The anchor was found on the beach near Berrow’s beach car park, about 200 yards from the wreck, and brought to us by a beach walker.”
“It appears to be very old and we’ve got a feeling it might be from the Berrow wreck, but no-one really knows.”
“It’s too small for a fishing boat, so a historian from a local museum is looking into it for us and we’re waiting to hear back on what they think.”
