Developer lodges appeal over Burnham seafront flats decision

The campaign to prevent this Burnham seafront home from being demolished and replaced with a block of 13 flats has been relaunched this week after the developer lodged a formal appeal over the decision to reject the scheme.

Moose Roper Limited has asked The Planning Inspectorate to examine the district council’s decision to turn down the amended application for a three-storey building at the end of Allandale Road incorporating 13 flats, the formation of access and car parking, plus the demolition of the existing building (pictured).

The application was considered by district councillors on Sedgemoor District Council’s Development Control Committee in April. They rejected the plans, going against the recommendation of the planning officer.

Tom Ashton, Allandale Road Action Group Treasurer, told Burnham-On-Sea.com on Tuesday evening (July 20th): “We will vigorously fight the appeal and do all we can to halt the development of this site. The planning building is out of keeping with the area, is far too close to the beach.”

Residents previously won a bid in November 2008 to get the first planning application at the site, for 14 flats, rejected on appeal by the Planning Inspectorate.

The developers then submitted a new, amended planning application with one less flat and a different building design that they argue fits in with the surroundings.
