Over 100 shoppers queued for over an hour to be first through the doors at Highbridge’s new Aldi supermarket when it was officially opened on Thursday (August 23rd).
Team GB star and Olympic silver medallist Samantha Murray cut a ribbon to formally open the new Aldi Highbridge store in Bennett Road at 8am, as pictured here.
A long line of shoppers snaked its way up to the door and at the front was Bill Watts who said he’d queued from 6.45am. “I love Aldi and wanted to be the very first shopper in the new store,” he said.
The first 30 people in the queue got their hands on a complimentary bag of fresh fruit and vegetables from Aldi.
The store’s manager, Emma Marchant, pictured below with Samantha, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Our customers were delighted to meet Samantha who’s lived in Somerset for the past ten years – it’s not every day you get to hold an Olympic medal.”
The new 1,254 sqm store just off Bennett Road has created 25 jobs and offers customers a range of British produce to shoppers and “an enhanced, convenient and varied shopping experience.”
Samantha, who also holds three gold World Championship medals, said: “I’ve had so much fun this morning meeting and greeting customers. I hope I have helped inspire them to stay active and maintain a healthy, balanced diet.”
The store is open from 8am until 10pm from Monday to Saturday and 10am until 4pm on Sunday.
Aldi is the UK’s fifth largest and fastest growing supermarket with over 775 stores and over 30,000 employees. In the 12 weeks to 15th July, Aldi grew sales by 10.9% and has a 7.5% UK share of the market. In 2018 Aldi will open 70 new stores and by 2022 will operate over 1,000 stores.
