Aldi to open new Highbridge store? Council welcomes firm’s interest

-

Supermarket giant Aldi is considering building a new store in Highbridge, it has emerged this week.

The firm is drawing up plans for a huge new store on vacant land next to the Isleport Business Park, near to the junction with the A38 through Highbridge, which could create dozens of new jobs.

Burnham and Highbridge town councillors discussed the proposals during a meeting on Monday evening (November 14th).

Cllr Andy Brewer said: “We’ve received information that Aldi is considering building a new store in Highbridge at Isleport Business Park. We should get more details soon.”

Cllr Phil Harvey added: “I would ask Highbridge members to bear in mind that this could be good news for the town centre – for just as Burnham benefitted from hundreds of thousands of pounds of ‘106 funding’ for the town centre when Tesco expanded its store, Highbridge could get funding from Aldi this time.”

While no formal planning application has yet been submitted by Aldi, the firm is already in talks with local authorities.

Burnham-On-Sea.com understands that Aldi representatives have visited Highbridge in recent days to see the site.

An Aldi spokeswoman told Burnham-On-Sea.com this week: “We are always considering new locations for stores across the UK. As always, when we have confirmed a location for a new store we will update the local community.”
