Three youngsters from Burnham and Highbridge Air Cadets took to the skies this week to complete their gliding induction courses.
On Sunday (19th January), CI Jeff Jackson took the trio of cadets from Burnham’s 290 Sqn Detached Flight to 621 Volunteer Gliding School Squadron Hullavington.
They were taught how to launch and recover gliders and, in near perfect flying conditions, Harry Jackson and Harry Bartlett completed four flights each and were awarded their GIC 2 course, having completed GIC 1 on a previous visit in December last year.
Reece Cash was there for the first time and completed three flights, therefore receiving his GIC 1.
During the flights the cadets took over the controls and performed prescribed manoeuvres.
“These Gliding Induction Courses prepare them for residential Gliding Scholarship Courses which they can apply for when they turn fifteen and a half. They could actually go solo in a glider at sixteen, before they can apply for a driving licence,” said a spokesman.
The cadets meets every Thursday evening at 7.30pm-9.45pm and provides a wide range of activities, varying from adventure and leadership training, to gliding. Those interested in joining should visit the unit, located in Highbridge Road (opposite the entrance to the Sea Cadets access road in Cassis Close) or call 01934 647805 or 01278 781409 during these times.
