Drama unfolds during Burnham air cadets visit to rescue helicopter

-

A group of Burnham-On-Sea air cadets got to see more than they bargained for when they were taken on an RAF helicopter flight just as a real rescue incident unfolded.

The cadets, many who have never flown before, were shown around the RAF’s Westland Sea King Search and Rescue helicopter before taking to the air for a 20-minute training flight.

Whilst they were there the cadets witnessed an emergency call that came in from Kinloss co-ordination centre in Scotland.

The crew were dispatched to a walker in difficulty some 20 miles away on the North Devon coast.

“It was a great opportunity to see the work of the RAF up close and the incident showed how a real rescue is handled,” said a spokesman.

The group meets every Thursday evening at 7.30pm-9.45pm and provides a wide range of activities, varying from adventure and leadership training, to gliding.

Those interested in joining should visit the unit, located in Highbridge Road (opposite the entrance to the Sea Cadets access road in Cassis Close) or call 01934 647805 or 01278 781409 during these times.
