New Active Living Centre set to launch this week in West Huntspill

-

A taste of Tai Chi and a free buffet will be on the menu this week at the launch of a new Active Living Centre at Balliol Hall in West Huntspill, near Highbridge.

Residents aged 50 and over from East and West Huntspill, Woolavington, Puriton and Pawlett are invited to the official opening of the ‘Poppins’ Centre on Thursday (27th March) between 10.30am and 2pm.

It is being established as part of the Partnerships for Older People Project, led by Somerset County Council and developed through Age Concern Somerset with the aim of helping the over 50s stay healthy and active in their communities.

The launch event will be an opportunity to meet new people and try out fun activities including Flexercise and Tai Chi, as well as take part in health and welfare talks, quizzes and musical sing-alongs.

Free refreshments and a buffet lunch will be provided at the launch, which is also an opportunity to let organisers know what activities you would like the centre to provide in the future.

The new ALC will run twice a month at Balliol Hall by local volunteers, supported by the Partnerships for Older People Project team. Entry will be free, with refreshments provided at 50p and a two-course lunch for £4. Alternatively packed lunches are welcome.

Emily Ruthven, Partnerships for Older People Project team leader with Age Concern Somerset, said: “It is great to see local volunteers coming together to make this possible. The centres are all about providing opportunities for older people to access information and activities within their local community and I’m sure ‘Poppins’ will be a great success.”

Mark Healey, Somerset County Councillor for Huntspill, said: “People can become isolated in any community. This centre will bring people together and be an opportunity to build community links and forge new friendships, enhancing everyone’s lives. I’m sure it will be a great success.”

Similar Active Living Centres operate in Burnham and Highbridge, as previously reported by Burnham-On-Sea.com.
