-

These were the scenes on the A38 through Rooksbridge following a serious collision involving a Police car in the early hours of this morning (Tuesday).

A Police officer was trapped in his vehicle and had to be freed by fire crews shortly after 1.30am.

The A38 between Rooksbridge and East Brent was closed for over seven hours until 9am this morning as Police carried out investigation work at the scene.

Police spokeswoman Niamh Byre told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We were called at 1.34am today to the A38 Bristol Road in Rooksbridge, Axbridge, to reports of a one vehicle road traffic collision involving an officer in a marked police vehicle.”

“The officer was trapped in the vehicle and had to be freed by the fire service. The air ambulance was also in attendance and the officer was taken to hospital in a life-threatening condition. The officer’s family are aware.”

She adds: “Two police dogs who were also in the vehicle at the time of the collision were also taken straight to a veterinary hospital. They were checked and found not to have suffered any injuries.”

“Bristol Road was closed from the Mendip Road junction to Kingsway, Tarnock.”

“The road remains partially closed this morning between Tarnock Garage and Chapel Road. Motorists are advised to avoid the area if possible.”

One reader, who took this photo, told Burnham-On-Sea.com she heard the air ambulance leaving Rooksbridge at around 3.40am.

Caroline Peters, Head of Tri-Force Specialist Operations, said: “Our thoughts are with our officer and his family and we’re supporting them and our colleagues through this difficult time.”
