Two-vehicle crash at blackspot in Brent Knoll raises fresh safety calls

-

A two-vehicle crash at an accident blackspot near Burnham-On-Sea yesterday (Sunday, July 20th) has prompted fresh calls for safety improvements.

A car and a horse transporter were damaged in a collision on the A38 at the busy junction next to the Fox and Goose Hotel through Brent Knoll, which has seen many accidents in recent years.

Emergency services were called to the collision at around 2.30pm, leading to the partial closure of the road.

A police spokeswoman told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Several people were treated by ambulance crews for injuries that were not believed to be serious. A horse inside the horse box was also not hurt.”

“Anyone who witnessed the incident who has not already spoken to the police should call us on the non emergency number 101, quoting the log number 707.”

There have been several accidents at the same junction over the years and this latest incident adds to the pressure on Somerset County Council to consider safety improvements.

Brent Knoll councillor Bob Filmer told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We have been trying to get improvements here for years. While the layout is far better than the position 20 years ago, we have always wanted to see traffic lights or a roundabout installed.”

“The County Council has gone quiet on those proposals recently, which we have assumed is down to the proposals by Sanders Garden World to build a roundabout on the A38 as part of its expansion plans. If those proposals don’t go ahead, then that leaves a question about whether safety changes can go ahead sooner.”
