Police have arrested scores of drivers suspected of drink and drug driving across Somerset, just two weeks into their annual Christmas clampdown.
Since the start of the operation on December 1st, there have been 130 arrests for drink and drug driving offences. Checks are underway in the Burnham-On-Sea area.
Police say drivers risk up to six months’ imprisonment, an unlimited fine and a substantial driving ban if they are caught driving while above the legal limit. Anyone who causes a death while drink or drug driving faces up to 14 years’ imprisonment.
The force’s Christmas roads policing operation, which runs throughout December, is using community intelligence to target drivers potentially under the influence of drink or drugs.
Police are asking the public to let them know if they suspect someone may be driving while intoxicated.
“Each of these individuals made the choice to put lives at risk by getting behind the wheel while intoxicated – and will now face serious consequences.”

Police say the information received is used in conjunction with Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) and CCTV data to alert officers to the whereabouts of potential offenders, enabling them to take swift action.
Last Christmas, there were 346 drink and drug driving arrests in the Somerset force area.
