Burnham-On-Sea fire station crews had a busy weekend with TEN call-outs over two days, including to attend a crash in Burnham, tackle a landfill blaze near Bridgwater, and rescue a dog from a cave at Crook Peak.
The Burnham-On-Sea fire station crews were called out 41 times in total during June, with ten of the call-outs taking place on Saturday June 29th and Sunday June 30th.
The busy weekend of incidents included a single car collision on Saturday morning near the junction of Stoddens Lane and Queen’s Drive, as pictured here. A car left the road and ended up in a hedge following a medical incident. A motorist was taken to hospital.
Burnham-On-Sea fire crews were also called to help at an eight-pump blaze at the Walpole Landfill Site near Bridgwater over the weekend.
A large quantity of waste had set alight in the hot weather. Crews battled in the heat to extinguish the blaze, pictured below.
Crews from Burnham were also called to Crook Peak on Sunday (June 30th) just before 9am to reports of a dog stuck in a cave.
A fire spokesman said: “One appliance from Burnham-On-Sea and the specialist rescue team from Bridgwater were sent to Crooks Peak having been contacted by a dog owner to request help after his beloved Akita had run into a cave and become trapped.”
“When our appliance arrived on scene we liaised with the dog owner and were led to the cave entrance. The owner had done the right thing in calling the Fire Service and not endangering himself by attempting a rescue.”
“Crews set up a SHACS system (Safety At Height and Confined Space) to perform the rescue of Denzel the dog. One attendant entered the cave to locate Denzel, assisted him from the ledge upon which he had become trapped on, and he bounded happily out of the cave to his owner. Denzel was one very cuddly, content and most charming dog!”
A Burnham fire spokesman says it was a very busy month overall: “We have attended quite a range of incidents. These include a large fire at The Rosewood, a fire at the Puriton Inn, car and tractor fires, a number of property fires, animal rescues, assisting the ambulance service, road collisions, and our welfare pod was required a number of times to support incidents in other areas.”
