A brand new Diabetes support group is set to launch in Burnham-On-Sea this weekend.
Burnham and District Lions Club, with support from Diabetes UK and local GP surgeries, is launching the new support group.
“There is and continues to be a significant increase in people being diagnosed with Diabetes, both type 1 and Type 2, which are putting significant pressure on doctors and specialist nurses,” Phil Cooke, Group Chairman, told Burnham-On-Sea.com.
“This increase is being seen worldwide and in an effort to combat this, the Lions Club International are establishing support groups around the world. These support groups are being operated independently but are aiming to achieve the same goals.”
He added: “We at the Burnham group are planning to hold bi-monthly meetings and will, on a regular basis, invite specialists to talk to the group. They will give advice on Podiatrists, diet and help on exercise which is beneficial to all.”
“Our first meeting is being held at the Baptist Church on Saturday 26th January from 11am to 2pm and is being based as a drop-in meeting to establish how many people can benefit from our group.”
“We would also like to see not only Diabetics but their carers, family and anyone who thinks they may be at risk of being a diabetic and anyone interested in the group.”
