Burnham-On-Sea Town Council thanks former MP

-

Burnham and Highbridge’s former MP has this week been formally thanked by town councillors for his work in the two towns over the past 27 years.

David Heathcoat-Amory was handed a glass memento by the Mayor, Cllr Michael Clarke, during a short ceremony held at the start of Monday’s town council meeting.

Cllr Neville Jones hailed the former MP, who lost his seat to Tessa Munt by 800 votes at May’s General Election, as a “dedicated and assiduous representative for the Burnham area.”

He also recounted how the former MP had secured funding for the removal of Burnham’s crumbling beach boating pool in 1989, had successfully campaigned for extra cash to make the town’s sea wall stronger, and had also been key to developing Highbridge’s Isleport Industrial Park.

“27 years is a record that deserves recognition, particularly given the impact you have had in this area,” Cllr Jones told him during the ceremony at the Council Chambers in Jaycroft Road.

Mr Heathcoat-Amory thanked the council, adding that he has “a great affiliation with Burnham and Highbridge.”

Town councillors paid for the memento out of their own pockets, rather than use council funds.
