Followers of Burnham-On-Sea fashion student Matt Bowkett were kept on the edge of their seats on Thursday night (March 2nd) when he only just managed to avoid being booted off Sky One’s Project Catwalk TV show.
During this week’s episode, the programme’s five contestants were tasked with making an outfit for Top Shop, with the possibility of a design contract with the company up for grabs.
But the nerves were showing on the face of 21-year-old Matt, from Stoddens Road, after actress and model Liz Hurley dubbed the dress he designed as being “droopy and dreary.”
The outfits had to be completed in just 12 hours – which didn’t leave much time for the contestants to get their designs right.

Matt struggled with the colour and design of the dress he was making, and admitted “it was a challenge in the timeframe given.”
And Liz Hurley said she “didn’t like the way the outfit was put together,” and asked: “Haven’t I seen it somewhere before?”
It was then down to the judges to decide whether Matt should go home or survive another week.
Within three of the contestants given the green light to continue, the judges had to pick between Matt and fellow competitor Renato.
After a nervous few seconds, they voted in Matt’s favour – and he therefore goes through to next week’s episode when he’ll be among the final four contestants.

Speaking to Burnham-On-Sea.com after Thursday’s programme was aired, Matt said: “The nerves were about me, but I didn’t think the dress I designd was all that bad. I thought it was fresh and different – even if the colours were a bit dreary.”
Neither Matt’s design or the other contestants dresses were picked to feature in Top Shop in the end.

Project Catwalk gives young fashion designers the chance of a lifetime to have their collection shown at the 2006 London Fashion Week.
With £20,000 and a feature in Elle magazine also up for grabs, the competition is intense.
Project Catwalk airs on Sky One at 8pm every Thursday.
