A Burnham-based anti-nuclear campaign group has this week voiced concern over plans for 25 lorry loads of “highly radioactive” waste to be transported through the area on their way to Hinkley Point.
Parents Concerned About Hinkley (PCAH) says it is worried about safety and security when the lorries are set to begin moving the nuclear waste through our area.
Jo Brown from PCAH, pictured, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “The Nuclear Decommissioning Agency is again seeking to transport highly radioactive skips to Hinkley Point from other sites including Sizewell and Oldbury.”
“That would mean a continuous transport from the east coast of the UK to the west coast. You will be exposed to lethal radioactive air pollution.”
“In spite of repeatedly claiming to prioritise safety, the NDA are actually seeking to cut the cost of providing on-site decommissioning facilities around the UK for the skips.”
“Somerset stakeholders previously vehemently opposed importing skips to Hinkley and were assured that it would not happen – so much for trust in the UK’s nuclear regulators.”
However, an NDA spokesman played down the concerns this week, telling Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Following a review of its waste strategy, Magnox plans to transport a small volume of waste from three sites to Hinkley Point A.”
“We believe this approach will make best use of our assets, maximise the environmental benefits by recycling as much metal as practicable, and save the taxpayer money.”
“The plans will result in the interim storage at Hinkley Point A of around 15 additional intermediate level waste packages, out of approximately 1,000 such packages at Hinkley Point, and up to 25 additional lorry movements.”
“All transport movements are conducted in accordance with the regulations on transporting radioactive material in Great Britain.”
“The plans do not compromise safety, security or the environment and are subject to planning consent. Magnox will continue to engage with stakeholders as its plans progress.”
