Burnham-On-Sea’s Coastguards were called out to FOUR incidents in Brean on Sunday (May 26th).
The team was kept busy with more than eight hours of incidents.
Coastguards were first called out at 11am to reports of live ammunition having been uncovered by metal detector enthusiast John Couchman from Taunton, pictured right.
John told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “I uncovered the .22 shell in the sand and immediately recognised that it was live so alerted the beach warden who in turn contacted the Coastguards to have it safely removed. I’m relieved that it was taken away.”
Then at 1pm, Burnham Coastguards were called to Brean Down amid reports that a dog had gone over the edge.
Coastguard officer Ian Jefferies told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “There was concern that the owner might put himself in danger to reach the terrier, which had fallen down the cliffs. Sadly, we found the dog’s body at the base of the Down deceased shortly afterwards. The dog, called Rupert, was recovered for the owner to give it a proper send off.”
Then, whilst on the dog incident, Coastguards were tasked to help an ambulance crew get a man with an injured leg off the beach.
“Two of the Burnham Coastguards and two members from BARB stretchered the man to the ambulance for treatment. Our thanks go to the BARB crew for their assistance during a very busy period,” said Ian.
The fourth incident of the day at 7.55pm saw the crews called back to Brean where a taxi had become submerged by the incoming tide, as reported here and pictured right.
“It was on Brean Beach with a person inside. When we arrived on scene, the car was submerged but all persons were out, cold but fortunately safe,” added Ian.
