Sixteen new seafront illuminations were switched on along Burnham’s Esplanade by the town’s MP on Thursday evening.
David Heathcoat-Amory pushed down a specially-made plunger to turn on the new blue and white lights, which illuminated the seafront between the Tourist Information Centre and Sailing Club.
A crowd of almost 50 local residents and VIPs watched the ceremony at Burnham’s hovercraft station, including Mayor Eric Gill and Mayoress Gilli Kenyon-Gill plus town and district councillors.
Mr Heathcoat-Amory told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We’re a holiday destination so it’s quite right that we look like one too.”
“You just have to look at these lights and you know Burnham is open for business – I fully approve of them. It’s a golden half-mile.”
Cllr Neville Jones, who led the initiative to get the new lights installed, added: “The new lights are actually very similar to the ones installed in Nice, France – so we’re now actually starting to compete with some of the world’s best holiday resorts!”
In addition to the 16 new lights, 27 existing seafront illuminations have been switched on between The Reed’s Arms and St Andrew’s Church in time for the Easter holiday period.
