A decision on whether Highbridge Library will be shut down in a cost-cutting move by Somerset County Council will be made in November.
Burnham-On-Sea.com first reported on Monday how town councillors have expressed fears that the library in Market Street, pictured, has been earmarked for closure.
Somerset County Council spokeswoman Elizabeth Kulh told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Somerset County Council, like many other authorities, is currently reviewing its library service. The review will seek to ensure that the service is financially sustainable in the future and that it meets the needs of Somerset people.”
“We are looking at the possibility of extending partnership working and at the role of volunteer support for the service. We are also considering examples of different forms of governance such as trusts.”
“As part of the review process we want to hear the views and ideas of people who use the service and potentially interested community organisations such as Parish Councils.”
“A number of focus groups are being held across the county to give people the chance to discuss the issues and give their feedback.”
“No decisions have been made on the future of any individual libraries, and none will be made until the budget for 2011/2012 has been agreed. Any significant service changes are likely to be preceded by some local consultation.”
“The Library Review is now likely to be considered by the County Council’s Cabinet at a meeting on 1st November rather than on 20th October.”
