A new community garden put together by members of Highbridge Residents’ Association has won two sought-after awards for the group.
The team has won special recognition in the annual Homes in Sedgemoor Garden Competition, and a third place in the ‘Developing’ category of the National Britain in Bloom competition.
The association was reformed with new group members earlier in the year, and immediately got stuck into a regeneration project at the previously rundown community garden at Morland Community Hall by transforming it into a colourful community garden.
Chairwoman Kim Chatwin told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “The garden is a huge achievement for the group and we are very proud to have received so much praise for our efforts.”
“It means so much to us that we were awarded a special prize from the tenant judges of the 2010 Homes in Sedgemoor Garden Competition, as these are local residents and people from Sedgemoor who have seen the work we’ve been doing first hand.”
“We also found out that we were in the running for the Britain in Bloom award on July 19th, and before we knew it we were in Bath on September 16th collecting our award!”
“We’re all thrilled that the garden has been recognised on a national level, and are keen to continue contributing to the Highbridge area with the support of other residents nearby. Finally I’d like to say a big thank you to everyone who has supported us and helped to make the garden what it is today.”
Highbridge Residents’ Association is keen to encourage any Highbridge residents who are interested in joining the association to contact them direct, or drop in at their group meetings, if they have any ideas or issues to raise.
Gary Orr of Homes in Sedgemoor added: “I’m thrilled for the group. They have united and worked so hard to achieve what they have at the garden, and to receive two awards in just two months is a great accomplishment. We will continue to support them in their plans for the future, and look forward to watching their garden grow!”
