Police have issued an appeal for witnesses following a fatal road traffic collision on the M5 motorway at Burnham-On-Sea last night (Friday October 8th).
Both northbound and southbound carriageways of the M5 between junctions 22 at Burnham and 23 at Bridgwater were closed, as pictured, after the incident at 10.47pm.
A single vehicle collision occurred on the northbound carriageway in which a man in his 20s left his vehicle and crossed the central reservation where he was in collision with a vehicle travelling on the southbound carriageway. It was later confirmed that the injured man had died.
Police are seeking the driver of a vehicle – possibly a silver or light coloured Renault – which may have left the scene and continued on its journey on the northbound carriageway.
“This vehicle is not thought to have had any involvement in the original incident but is thought to have been in a slight collision with one of the emergency vehicles attending the scene. The vehicle may have slight damage,” said a police spokesman.
“Police investigators believe the driver could have crucial information to help their enquiries.”
Police re-opened the northbound carriageway at about midnight and the closures on the southbound carriageway were removed shortly after 6am this morning (Saturday).
