Dozens of bulbs were planted alongside a busy Burnham-On-Sea road on Saturday (October 9th) as part of a record-breaking event led by the town’s Rotary Club.
Youngsters from Burnham Scouts joined local members of the Rotary Club in burying handfuls of the flower bulbs next to Queens Drive.
Rotary President Frank Clegg told Burnham-On-Sea: “Rotary Clubs across the UK are taking part in the largest-ever planting of purple crocus bulbs.”
“These will burst into flower during January and February next year to mark the Rotary Club’s ‘Thanks For Life Week’, which will celebrate the club’s achievement in fighting to eradicate polio throughout the world and raising awareness of the club.”
Rotary International hopes to break a Guiness World Record with the most number of crocuses planted in October.
Frank added: “We’re very grateful for the help of Burnham Scouts and also to Sanders Garden World, who donated the bulbs.”
The Ruby Giant purple crocus bulbs represent the dye colour dabbed on a children’s little finger to indicate they have been immunised against polio in the few remaining parts of the globe where the disease is still alive.
