Graveyards in Burnham-On-Sea are running out of space, meaning mourners in the town may soon have to bury their loved ones in a nearby village.
Town councillor Arthur Thorogood told the annual meeting of the council that the cemeteries in Burnham Road, Highbridge and Westfield Road, Burnham are both nearly full.
“The two cemeteries are running out of space. Eventually people will have to go to the Brent Road cemetery on Berrow Triangle,” he said.
Town clerk Eileen Shaw also said this week: “I can confirm that the Burnham cemetery is full now except for four reserved plots. But the one in Burnham Road in Highbridge has as many as 35 plots left for burials.”
“We anticipate that at the current rate of use, there won’t be a problem for two years there,” and added that “the burial of ashes will not be too much a problem for a number of years.”
The town council’s joint burial committee is aware of the issue and this is why the Brent Road cemetery has been opened for Burnham and Highbridge residents.
