Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and leaders in Burnham-On-Sea got creative on Saturday (October 9th) when they took part in a national charity Christmas card making effort.
Over 40 members of 1st Burnham-On-Sea Scout Group took part in a colourful, glitter filled card making afternoon in aid of Whizz-Kidz, the young people’s mobility charity.
Being run in partnership with BBC’s Blue Peter, the Go Cardz appeal aims to produce 20,000 handmade cards to be sold in Tesco stores across the country from 15th November.
The vital funds, which are hoped to exceed £80,000, will then be used by Whizz-Kids to provide additional wheelchair assessment units across the UK, where children are assessed and fitted with bespoke equipment which they would otherwise be kept waiting for.
Beaver Leader Mandy Williams told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Beavers are busy working hard towards their friendship challenge badge and creative activity badge. The friendship challenge allows us to help others less fortunate than us and learn about our world and there is no better way to achieve this than combining charity work and playing with glitter and paints.”
“We were very excited when the Cubs invited us to join in with making Christmas Cards for the Blue Peter Appeal for Whizz Kids and the Cubs and Beavers have all created some fantastic cards and had a great time at the same time. We hope that our cards bring the same happiness that we have had making them to those who receive them for Christmas.”
The charity, which has changed the lives of nearly 11,000 disabled children since 1990, has supported young people’s access to mobility equipment, including wheelchairs whilst delivering wheelchair skills-training, work placements and life skills and opportunities to support the transition from childhood to adulthood.
The project marks Blue Peter’s 49th annual appeal, having worked with hundreds of UK and international charities since 1963.
