Brean Down fishermen spark Coastguard beach incident

-

Several search flares were fired into the night sky above Brean beach by Coastguards on Saturday night (October 16th) amid concerns for the safety of a group of people on the end of Brean Down.

A team of Burnham-On-Sea Coastguards rushed to the beach at 7.45pm after a beach walker raised the alarm, having spotted several lights on a rocky outcrop beyond the wartime fort.

The Coastguard team fired the flares into the sky to illuminate the mudflats around the Down and also used a high-powered search light to try and establish whether the people were safe.

A Coastguard truck was also sent along the Down to the fort, where the crew were able to confirm that the group of sea anglers was safe and well.

A Burnham Coastguard spokesman told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Given the state of the incoming tide, there was concern for the men. The walker did the right thing in contacting us – we always urge people to get in contact if they have any concerns for the welfare of people on the coastline.”
