Burnham-On-Sea Swim and Sports Academy co-owner Mark Conklin has been selected to take part in the Ironman World Championships later this year.
Mark, 49, has won a sought-after wildcard place to compete in the event in Hawaii which comprises a 2.4-mile roughwater swim, a 112-mile bike race and a 26.2-mile run.
“I’ve secretly entered the lottery for places each year for the past ten years,” Mark told Burnham-On-Sea.com.
“When I opened the email this time I thought it was another loss, but when I finally saw my name was on the list, all I could do was walk outside and scream!”
Mark says the trip in October will be more than simply a chance to participate in triathlon’s biggest event.
“I was raised in Hawaii and have been to the World Championships as a spectator, and with my wife Sara, who was a competing professional, and as part of a support team for a high-profile athlete. I would be so pleased and humbled if I can add ‘finisher’ to the list.”
“I am really looking forward it and will be training hard over the summer and aim to do well rather than just take part.”
