A Burnham-On-Sea volunteer is celebrating this week after winning a top award at the annual Somerset Sports Awards.
Dozens of sportsmen and women plus volunteers gathered at Somerset County Cricket Ground in Taunton for the awards ceremony.
Burnham’s Jonathan Smith, 21, has helped to organise two Community Games and is overseeing a Youth Festival weekend in Burnham on July 13th and 14th.
He received the award for oirganising the ‘Community Games of the Year’ after contacting Somerset Activity and Sports Partnership (SASP) to run an event for his BAY Centre group with learning difficulties.
The awards, run by SASP, received around 70 nominations this year.
As well as showcasing the great array of sporting talent in the county, the awards reward those volunteers who take on a number of roles in sports clubs and are the ‘unsung heroes’ of sport.
SASP chief executive Colin Johnson said: “The sports awards are a great chance to reward the people who keep sport going in Somerset and offer lots of opportunity for everyone to access sport no matter what age or ability.”
In May, we reported here how Jonathan had been crowned ‘shine a light volunteering champion’ at a separate presentation in Crewkerne to celebrate the one-year anniversary of the Olympic torch arriving in Somerset.
