This young porpoise was washed up on Brean beach on Monday (June 24th) – the second such discovery in a fortnight.
The body of the young mammal was found near Brean Down after the morning’s high tide following stormy sea conditions over the weekend.
Stephen Marsh, a spokesman for British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR), a marine animal rescue organisation, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Porpoise strandings are not uncommon at this time of the year in the calving season when there are very high and low tides.”
“The large variance makes it easy for the young mammals to get separated from their families and then encounter difficulty.”
Earlier this month, we reported here how an injured 1.4m-long porpoise had been rescued after being washed up on Brean beach. It later died of its injuries.
