Plans to build two blocks of four-storey retirement apartment blocks at this site in the centre of Burnham-On-Sea have been rejected by planners this week.
The scheme, from Abracore Ltd, proposed 35 apartments be built in Victoria Street, on the site of the former Tucker’s Garage, which was knocked down in 2007.
However, Sedgemoor District Council has turned down the scheme and in a letter to the Henry Mein Partnership, the agents for Abracore, Claire Pearce, Sedgemoor’s group manager for strategy and business services, raised concerns over flooding, affordable housing, outdoor sports facilities and loss of privacy for nearby homeowners.
She wrote: “The submitted flood risk assessment does not demonstrate that the risks of flooding as a result of the development can be adequately managed.”
“The proposed development will overlook the terrace of residential properties to the north (Victoria Cottages) to an unacceptable degree and cause significant loss of privacy.”
Abracore is likely to re-think its plans and submit a new scheme or submit a formal appeal against the decision.
The Town Council’s Planning Applications Committee also raised a number of objections over the scheme, as we reported here.
They were concerned that the 19 planned parking places would be “inadequate”, that the new access road to the site would be dangerous, that the buildings would be out of keeping with surrounding properties.
