Calls for extra parking outside Burnham Post Office ‘have been ignored’
Town councillors say their calls for more parking space outside a Burnham-On-Sea post office have been ‘completely ignored.’
Double yellow lines outside the Vicarage Street facility, pictured right, are “excessive” and should be scaled back to allow for an extra parking bay, they said at a meeting of the Town Improvements Committee this week.
Cllr Neville Jones said it had been “at least two years” since town councillors first called on Somerset County Council to remove some of the restrictons at the site, but in that time “nothing had been done and it seems as though we have been completely ignored.”
“The old entrance to the post office, near to the garage in Vicarage Street, has been boarded up for years, so it makes perfect sense to turn this into an extra parking area,” he said.
Cllr Louise Parkin, Chairman of the Town Improvements Committee, added: “We’re very disappointed about the lack of action here, especially given the small number of parking spaces along the High Street. This work is urgently needed.”
Town Clerk Eileen Shaw said a letter from Somerset County Council justified the delay by stating that any changes would fall under the Traffic Regulation Orders, and therefore require the authority to consult with local police and traders. It would therefore more cost effective to wait until several parking changes are required in the town before making the alterations, it argued.
The council is following up the discussion by putting further pressure on the County Council to make the changes as soon as possible.
