Burnham-On-Sea couple’s ‘absolute relief’ as grandson escapes Beirut

-

A delighted Burnham-On-Sea couple have described their relief at hearing their ten-year-old grandson and daughter-in-law have escaped from war-torn Beirut.

Edna Moore and husband Tony from Ashcott Drive told Burnham-On-Sea.com on Monday (July 31st) that they were “absolutely relieved” to receive a call from young Michael and mother Neyla – shown in this family photo – to say they had escaped from the Middle East.

Edna said: “It was very dicey, but my daughter-in-law and grandson managed to get away in a taxi from Beirut to the Syrian border over the weekend.”

“They heard bombs dropping and saw the damage that has occurred there.”

“A friend managed to take them both to Damascus where they boarded a plane and flew back to Heathrow on Sunday.”

“We are absolutely relieved that they are both safe and back home in Wiltshire. We are looking forward to seeing them very soon.”

Nayla had taken Michael to see her family in Beirut in early July before the conflict flared up, and was not among the Britons to be evacuated on HMS Gloucester – leaving them trapped in the war-torn region.
