This stranded seal was rescued by wildlife carers after being washed up on Burnham-On-Sea beach on Friday evening (November 19th).
The common seal, pictured here, was spotted in a disorientated state on the sands near Burnham Low Lighthouse by a beach walker.
Rescuers from East Huntspill based wildlife charity Secret World were called to help it and the animal was taken away for a checkover overnight.
Secret World Animal Care Manager Sara Cowen told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “The seal had some blood on its coat, but is otherwise in good shape and healthy.”
“We gave it a checkover and it was released on Sunday evening.”
“It is quite rare to see seals on Burnham beach and I think the animal may have become disorientated and been washed up the estuary during this week’s floods.”
It’s not the first time that seals have been washed ashore in our area, though.
A common seal was washed up on the beach at Brean in 2008 and a young seal pup was also found alive on Berrow beach in November 2005.
A fortnight ago, a walker on Brean beach found the body of a dolphin or porpoise washed up on the sands.
