Rescue services busy in Burnham as heatwave boosts beach visitors

-

Burnham-On-Sea’s marine rescue services and lifeguards were kept busy over the weekend when the hot weather brought crowds of visitors into the town.

Burnham’s Coastguards, RNLI, BARB and lifeguards were all called out to deal with a variety of incidents as temperatures soared during the heatwave.

Burnham’s lifeguards searched for several missing children, who were found successfully, and medical treatment was given to a man who had collapsed.

Manager Luke Yabsley told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “A member of the public reported that a 24 year-old man had collapsed outside Wetherspoons and two of our lifeguards, Ross and Amy, were quick to respond with their medical kit.”

“They assessed the situation, alerted the ambulance service and gave the man oxygen before the ambulance arrived – showing the importance of having this equipment on hand nearby.”

BARB and Burnham’s Coastguards were called to help remove an elderly man in his 80s from the beach. He had collapased in the dunes near Burnham’s lighthouse and was transported by the teams to a waiting ambulance.

Many mud walkers trying to reach the sea at low tide were called back during the weekend. BARB also handed out over 200 safety leaflets on Sunday to visitors as part of its pro-active safety work.

Burnham RNLI also assisted with the rescue of two young swimmers on Saturday evening, as reported here, and rescued a Punch and Judy entertainer’s car, as featured here.
