Drama classic to be performed in Burnham-On-Sea this Saturday

-

A drama classic will be performed at Burnham-On-Sea’s Princess Theatre this Saturday (20th February).

Local group Blue Sky Theatre & Arts are producing Samuel Beckett’s ‘Waiting for Godot’, a tragicomedy set on a lonely country road.

‘Waiting for Godot’ is a play that divided audiences when it was first performed in 1953 and since then it’s gained critical acclaim and a reputation as a challenging work.

“I didn’t know what to expect,” stage manager Rebecca Strickland told Burnham-On-Sea.com.

“I’d never seen the play before but I’d heard it was unconventional. I wasn’t ready for how funny the script would be, or how much deep the characters relationships would be.”

“Blue Sky Theatre and Arts facilitates the expression and integration of artists in recovery from addiction. Founded in Burnham-On-Sea at The Princess Theatre, Blue Sky has spread its wings to work with people in recovery throughout the South West.”

Director Lewis Coleman added: “As actors, we talk a lot about Steptoe and Son and Rising Damp. There is comedy in the tragedy of loneliness and dependence.”

“There is something real about it and most of us can relate to it in some way. As recovering addicts, we spent a long time waiting, waiting for the next drink or drug; waiting for help. Because sometimes we are not capable of anything else.”

“And in the waiting there is life. Some of us delve into ourselves and try to understand what makes us tick; others are content to just mope and moan with the punches.”

Tickets for ‘Waiting for Godot’ are priced at £8 (or £6 concession), available from the Princess Theatre & Arts Centre or online. The performance starts at 7.30pm.
