Burnham’s former MP Tessa Munt campaigns for UK to stay in EU

-

Burnham-On-Sea’s former MP Tessa Munt has this week called for a united front on the EU by urging local political leaders to join her in campaigning to keep Britain at the heart of the European Union.

The former Lib Dem MP said this week: “This monumental decision will affect the economy, security and environment in Britain, the rest of Europe and beyond, for decades. Leaving the European Union would put us at risk and be a massive mistake.”

She added: “The Prime Minister has failed to ask the right questions in his negotiations with other heads of Government, so reform won’t go far enough. Why didn’t he insist on ending the monthly farce of moving the Parliament between Strasbourg and Brussels, which costs time and taxpayers’ money?”

“It’s really not clear whether we are ‘special’ or not, or what those who come here and work their socks off are able to claim in work benefits. However, for the time being this is a mere sideshow. In the short time between now and the Referendum on 23rd June, smack bang in the middle of the Glastonbury Festival, there is so much more than one man’s legacy and reputation at stake.”

Tessa Munt went on to add: “I’m calling for our new ‘fence-sitter’ MP, as he describes himself, and representatives of the local Labour and Green Parties to ask themselves the following questions: Is it best for Somerset, Britain and indeed Europe to have us within the biggest, most important economy on earth, or not?”

“Also, is it better in times of danger and insecurity to be with our friends, neighbours and allies, or not? When we are faced with huge global emergencies like climate change, pandemic disease and the refugee crisis, are we better able to deal with those together, or on our own?”

“And, closer to home, do they honestly believe George Osborne will plug the gap when our farmers, wildlife and tourism lose all European subsidies, members of our workforce are forced to return home and businesses shut up shop and head for the continent? The fact is, Britain is better in Europe, and Europe is better with Britain in it.”
